This retrofit project involved a centerless grinding machine used by a manufacturer of small home appliances, electronic components, and precision metal parts. The machine had been operating for many years to grind motor shafts and other precision shaft components in mass production.
Centerless grinding machines are particularly well suited for high-volume production because they can continuously grind cylindrical workpieces without holding them between centers. However, after years of operation, the customer began experiencing difficulties in maintaining the required dimensional tolerances and stable machining conditions, which gradually affected overall production efficiency.
Rather than replacing the machine entirely, the customer chose a centerless grinding machine retrofit. Retrofitting offered advantages in both investment cost and implementation time while allowing the company to continue utilizing the existing machine structure and established production process. How to Evaluate an Aging Centerless Grinder for Retrofit

Not every aging grinding machine is suitable for retrofit. Before determining the scope of this project, ORSKOREA first reviewed the condition of the existing centerless grinder to identify which parts could continue to be used and which areas required repair or replacement.
The inspection focused on the machine’s overall mechanical condition, machining stability, drive system, CNC, and electrical components. In particular, the key question was whether the existing machine structure could still support the required grinding accuracy after the necessary mechanical restoration and control-system upgrades.
Based on this evaluation, the retrofit scope was defined by retaining usable components, overhauling worn mechanical sections, and upgrading outdated CNC and electrical systems. This made it possible to improve the machine without unnecessarily replacing the entire equipment.
