Leukemia is one of the most serious diseases affecting children in Korea. You may have heard about leukemia, but it’s essential to understand what this disease truly entails.

백혈병은 한국에서 아이들에게 가장 심각한 질병 중 하나로 꼽힙니다. 백혈병에 대해 많이 들어보셨겠지만, 정확히 어떤 질병인지를 먼저 짚고 넘어가야 할 것 같습니다.

According to the National Cancer Information Center, leukemia occurs when normal blood cells in the bone marrow are transformed into cancer cells for unknown reasons.

Leukemia is broadly divided into acute and chronic types, and in the case of pediatric leukemia, most cases are acute. Among them, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) accounts for 75%. Leukemia begins in the bone marrow, and the exact causes of pediatric leukemia remain unknown.

백혈병은 국가암정보센터에 따르면, 골수에서 원인을 알 수 없는 정상 혈액 세포가 불명확한 원인으로 암세포로 전환된 것을 말한다고 합니다.

크게 급성백혈병과 만성백혈병으로 나눌 수 있는데, 소아 백혈병의 경우는 거의 대부분이 급성 백혈병을 앓고 있으며, 그 중에서도 급성림프모구백혈병이 75%를 차지한다고 합니다. 백혈병의 발생은 모두 골수에서 시작된다고 하죠. 소아백혈병은 발병 원인을 아직도 정확히 알아내지 못하고 있는 실정이라고 합니다.

From the images above, comparing February to July in 2023 and 2024, the number of pediatric cancer patients was approximately 600, 500. Additionally, you can see that approximately 31% of pediatric cancer cases are diagnosed as leukemia. On an annual basis, this equates to about 15 cases per 100,000 people.

위의 두 사진을 참고하시면, 2023년과 2024년 2월에서 7월 사이를 비교했을 때, 소아암 환자의 수는 약 600명, 500명에 이르는 것으로 나타났습니다. 또한, 소아암 중 약 31%가 백혈병으로 진단된다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 이는 매년 기준으로 봤을 때, 인구 10만 명당 15명 정도의 비율이라고 합니다.

These children not only endure complex treatment processes but also face families dealing with income loss, expensive medical bills, and the emotional stress caused by the uncertainty of treatment outcomes. For low-income families, these challenges are even more severe.

이들은 복잡한 치료 과정을 헤쳐 나가는 동시에 가족들은 소득 손실, 비싼 약값 그리고 치료의 불확실성으로 인한 심리적 압박 까지도 감당해야 한다고 합니다. 저소득층 가정일수록 이러한 상황은 더욱 심각하게 다가옵니다.

As shown in the graph above, the treatment cost per patient in 2020 reached up to 20 million KRW(13,500 USD). This highlights the critical role of sponsorship. Financial support not only aids a child’s recovery but also provides emotional relief to families, sending the message that they are not alone, and we are in this together from severe diseases.

위 그래프를 확인해 보시면, 환자 1인당 진료비가 2020년 기준으로 2천만원에 달한다고 하는데요. 이럴 때 일수록 후원이 역할이 중요함을 다시금 강조드릴 수 있습니다. 중증 질병으로부터 아이의 회복에 재정적인 지원을 제공함은 물론 정서적인 지지를 통해 가족들에게까지도 혼자가 아니라 우리가 함께 있다는 메시지 역시 전할 수 있습니다.

The sponsorship activities aim to alleviate these burdens. Economic assistance plays a significant role in reducing the stress and anxiety faced by families in crisis. Beyond monetary support, sponsorship strengthens community solidarity and embodies the values of ESG.
